As you know, all of the students at Jordan Elementary School will travel to Kaskaskia College on Friday, February 24th, 2012, to attend a performance of “Seussical the Musical”. Adapted from the Broadway version, this romp through the Seuss classics is hosted by The Cat in the Hat. Will the planet of Who survive? Will Horton pay attention to Gertrude? Will Mayzie ever return for her egg? With the power of imagination and the most miraculous “think” ever, the day is saved. We are requesting that all students bring $2.00 to school to cover some of the costs of attending this event. Students should bring this money to their classroom teacher by Thursday, February 16th, 2012. Thank you for your assistance! This will be a very rewarding, entertaining, and educational experience for all of our students! ****************************** ![]() Girls on the Run is an after school program for girls in 3rd – 5th grade that uses the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Through interactive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues, participants learn how to celebrate being girls. The program focuses on building self-esteem and improving emotional and physical health. During the 10-week program, girls are empowered with a greater self-awareness, a sense of achievement and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, happy and self-confident young women. Each session is led by trained coaches that guide and mentor girls through a fun and uplifting curriculum. Coaches teach specific life lessons such as dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer-pressure, making healthy decisions, and contributing to the community. Along the way, the girls train together to run in a 5K (3.1 mile) event with all of the other Girls on the Run participants from across the St. Louis region. Our goal is to EMPOWER all girls to… v Have a strong sense of identity v Give and receive support from a group v Stand up for themselves in a healthy manner v Have a healthy body image v Understand their importance in the community v Complete a 5K event IMPORTANT INFORMATION Practices & Race: The girls will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 3:30 – 4:45 p.m. Practices will begin February 21 and end on May 15 with an end-of-the-season celebration. Girls are only allowed to miss 2 practices. We will have a practice 5k prior to the 5k run/walk in St. Louis on Saturday, 5/12/12. Registration: Brochures for online registration forms will be coming soon. The fee for the 10-week, 20-lesson program is $50. Scholarships are available. Running Buddies: Each girl will be required to have a running buddy during the 5k in St. Louis. The race entry fee for running buddies will be $25. Volunteer Practice Partners: If you would be interested in volunteering to be a practice partner on Tuesdays/Thursdays, you will be offered a discounted race entry fee of $15. Volunteer Coach: This option allows Jordan School to have 2 teams if enough girls sign up. (GOTR enforces a maximum of 17 girls per team.) If you are interested in being a coach or assistant coach, training is required. There are two choices available: Sunday, 1/8/12, from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. or Saturday, 1/14/12, from 8 a.m. to noon. Both sessions are held in St. Louis. Please let Mrs. Miller know as soon as possible if you are interested! Raffle: Girls will be encouraged to sell 5 tickets at $5 each or 5 tickets for $20 during the season. GOTR Merchandise: Girls will have the opportunity (not mandatory) to purchase GOTR hoodies, hats, headbands, etc. during the season. Please contact Laurie Miller at lmiller@ccs135.com or 533-7145 x6130 if you have any questions. For more information about Girls on the Run, visit www.girlsontherunstlouis.org.
