The Why Try? Program The Why Try? Program is a simple, hands-on curriculum which helps youth overcome their challenges and improve outcomes in the areas of truancy, behavior, and academics. Why Try? teaches critical social and emotional principals to youth using a series of ten pictures which teach a principal, such as resisting peer-pressure, or that decisions have consequences. The visual components are then reinforced by music and physical activities. The major learning styles - visual, auditory, and body-kinesthetic - are all addressed. 1. THE MOTIVATION FORMULA
2. THE REALITY RIDE
3. TEARING OFF LABELS
4. DEFENSE MECHANISMS
5. CLIMBING OUT
6. JUMPING HURDLES
7. DESIRE, TIME, EFFORT
8. LIFT THE WEIGHT
9. GET PLUGGED IN
10. YOU CAN SEE OVER THE WALL
The Why Try? program at Jordan School has been created in an effort to help our students overcome their challenges and improve outcomes in the areas of truancy, behavior, and academics. The faculty of Jordan School believes that our school community, in many ways, is a smaller version of the larger Centralia community. Our school’s ethnic and economic diversity provides us with an ideal environment in which to teach our students tolerance and acceptance in many different areas. The faculty of Jordan School is committed to both teaching and modeling those behaviors that we hope to instill in our students. The Jordan School Why Try? Program allows the faculty and the students to focus on monthly Why Try? themes. At the beginning of each month, teachers at all grade levels introduce a new theme. A short lessson will be taught and a project will be assigned relating to the monthly theme. It is highly encouraged that these "take-home" projects are completed with the assistance of a parent or guardian in the home. ************************************************************************************************** SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK
In conjunction with teachers establishing and presenting these monthly Why Try? themes, students are encouraged to express and demonstrate positive behaviors on a daily basis in their classrooms and around the school. Each week, every classroom teacher will select one student as the SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK. Those students who have been selected as weekly winners by their teachers will then have their names announced over the school intercom. They will also receive a Central Park Certificate from Mr. Bland. At the end of each month, Jordan School will host a Good Conduct Party for those students who have received two or less time-outs during that month. All of the weekly SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK winners will have their names displayed in our main hallway and in the local newspaper.
